SHETLAND SHEEP:
Shetland sheep are a primitive breed originating in the Shetland Islands off the northern coast of Scotland.  This breed has not been improved over the years and as a result the fleece maintains its original fineness
Our flock of Shetlands is sheared each March.  The wool is processed at nearby mills.  The mills make spinning fibre, yarn, and batts for creating beautiful wool garments, blankets, and socks.

KATAHDIN SHEEP:
Katahdin sheep are a developed breed originating in the 1960s in Maine, USA.  Michael Peel, a large sheep producer, decided to develop a sheep breed that had shedding hair and did not need to be sheared.  This breed is named after Mount Katahdin which is near Piel Farm.

The hair does not contain lanolin and sheds when warm weather arrives in the spring.  The meat has a mild flavour and can be eaten either hot or cold.  A leg roast will provide a delicious dinner tonight and a tasty sandwich for lunch tomorrow.
